I got a side lip piercing on Friday. My piercer instructed me to clean the outside with orange dial antibacterial soap and the inside with listerine mouth wash three times a day. However, I keep hearing all these other ways that you are suppossed to clean it and to be honest I'm confused as heck. What IS the right way to clean it? Some people say not to use antibacterial dial soap and others say to use sea salt and vice versa. So far I think it is doing alright. It's a little swollen and it really doesn't hurt. But yeah, how should I clean it?How do I take care of my lip piercing?
Listerine isn't as good of an idea to use as a NON alcohol based mouthwash. its fine if you're diluting it, but really non alcohol is better. you SHOULD be rinsing with mouthwash after everything you eat or drink, and if you smoke after every cigarette.
you SHOULD be using sea salt to rinse with as well as rinsing with mouthwash. it helps pull out impurities. this should be done 2-3 times a day
washing with the antibacterial soap is fine. Some people prefer other things, such as antimicrobial soap (personally I use an antimicrobial soap called Provon to clean my piercings)
how about a list of things that you should NOT do?
NO alcohol, peroxide, or triple antibiotic agents. These are too harsh for your piercing. They're antibacterial, but they also kill the cells that your body is trying to make to heal.
NO neosporin or other similar creams. neosporin specifically says on the package not to use it on puncture wounds, and that is what a piercing is. creams of any kind will also cut off oxygen to your piercing and give bacteria a place to hide.
DO NOT mess with your jewelry no matter how tempting it is...whether its playing with it with your tongue or touching it with your hands...you're going to put stress on the piercing and slow down healing.

Caring for a new lip piercing?
Hey guys, I got my lip ring pierced on Saturday (Two days ago) and I have some questions about caring for it.
1) How long should I use salt + water for to keep my piercing clean? At the moment I am just gargling and moving the water to around the front of my mouth and then spitting the water out.
2) How long does it generally take to ...A) Stop hurting when rotating the ring, and be generally painless when you change jewlery
b) Completely heal
Is it safe for the skin around the bottom of my piercing (on the outside of my face) to look like the skin is peeling, or is about to peel? The colour is kind of yellow, though when it is dry it goes hard, like a scab.
Can It get infected from over cleaning, as in, washing my mouth and my face pretty much after every meal of the day
Can it take longer to heal from over cleaning, moving the piercing around (Forwards and sidewards)?

1) the recommended healing time for a lip piercing is about four months, and you should really keep it up for the whole healing period to ensure the best result and promote faster healing, plus it wil ward off infection.
2)Is different for everybody. Took mine about 4 weeks, but I've have friends whove taken longer/shorter. It also depends on how well u look after it. If it does get a little irritated the sea salt sould calm it down, just make sure u aren't using too much salt in the water or it can 'burn' the piercing wound. Complete healing is again different for everybody. Four months is recommended.
It's normal for the skin around to appear to be pealing, yes. My snake bites did this for about six weeks after I had them done, and my munroe did the same. I checked with my piercest when it first happened and she informed me it was the white blood cells vacating the wound as it healed. If your really concerned, however, u can always talk to ur piercest.
Cleaning it after every meal is a good idea to make sure nothing's stuck, but if you just rinse with water and properly clean it twice a day that's generally enough to ward off infection. You should continue using salt water to clean your piercing until it doesnt hurt any more, for me it was 2-3 works to stop hurting when i rotated it. Its going to hurt regardless when you change it because your moving the skin around inside of it. Your skin is dry and peeling around it because of the salt water, which is normal. The scabbing is because your body is trying to heal itself. It wont take longer to heal by cleaning and moving it your suppose to keep doing that to prevent your body from closing it.

1) the recommended healing time for a lip piercing is about four months, and you should really keep it up for the whole healing period to ensure the best result and promote faster healing, plus it wil ward off infection.
2)Is different for everybody. Took mine about 4 weeks, but I've have friends whove taken longer/shorter. It also depends on how well u look after it. If it does get a little irritated the sea salt sould calm it down, just make sure u aren't using too much salt in the water or it can 'burn' the piercing wound. Complete healing is again different for everybody. Four months is recommended.
It's normal for the skin around to appear to be pealing, yes. My snake bites did this for about six weeks after I had them done, and my munroe did the same. I checked with my piercest when it first happened and she informed me it was the white blood cells vacating the wound as it healed. If your really concerned, however, u can always talk to ur piercest.

well, now that you've already done it, i'll stop the lecture (since i pierced my own when i was young and naive:)).
first off, go buy some antibacterial, alcohol free mouthwash (my favorite is biotene), and use it twice a day, as well as after you eat, drink, etc. i can't stress enough how it MUST be alcohol free. this means no listerine. it will kill off growing cells and significantly slow healing. an alternative to this is swishing with a mixture of sea salt and water (it should taste like tears, about a two teaspoons for a glass of water), but this is kind of a hassle and hard to do after every single thing you eat.
as for the outside, you should clean it gently with a simple antibacterial, fragrance free soap in the morning and at night, and if anything gets on it or in it. neutrogena bar soap works well. you should use a q-tip, wet it, rub it in the bar of soap, and clean all around the piercing. then you should do the same thing with water, and make sure the soap is washed off completely.
pus is normal, don't worry about it too much, but you can put a warm compress on it to ease it up a bit.
OH- also, no makeup around it, and NO ALCOHOL OR PEROXIDE. bad bad bad way to clean it. that's rule #1. and don't drink beer if you can help it, it's possible to get a yeast infection from it (yes, in your mouth. gross)

You should never just 'leave it alone'. You will praobly see little yellow crustys on your lip, which are a good and bad sign. Those crustys are build of bacteria that didn't get into your lip, BUT if they do its like having a difty knife go through the hole of your lip. To clean it you soak the piercing in saline and then gentle wipe away the crustys with a cotton swap. My advise though, is to go to 2 or 3 more piercing salons and ask them, they will give you the right dierctions and they ALL will tell you that its never a good thing to not clean it...to help it heal faster you can take tylenol for the swelling and take vitamin B with zinc.

I always exfoliate my lips first with either a scratchy flannel or my toothbrush after I've brushed my teeth
THEN smother on the vaseline overnight and when you wake up they'll be plump and smooth.
For use during the day just use a little Vaseline as otherwise you look a bit foolish!
Burt's Bees it smoothes and adds a shine and the right amount of color its great i use it all the time and for lipgloss try covergirl it smells great and moustrrizes with a color shine i love it I REALLY HOPE I HELPED

To take best care of your lips you should keep them well moisturised and free of dry skin. Invest in a good quality lip balm (I personally love Body Shop's Born Lippy). Reapply every couple of hours.
Once in a week take a soft brush and run it over your lips to get rid of dry skin cells. That should do the trick.

Okay, so apply like five coats of lip balm (Any kind) and use lip gloss. what I do is a light layer of pink, a red-ish clear, and then the pink again and then a clear. It looks fab, but feels a bit heavy. just a little. And it keeps your lips really smooth too.

To take best care of your lips you should keep them well moisturised and free of dry skin. Invest in a good quality lip balm (I personally love Body Shop's Born Lippy). Reapply every couple of hours.
Once in a week take a soft brush and run it over your lips to get rid of dry skin cells. That should do the trick.

Okay, so apply like five coats of lip balm (Any kind) and use lip gloss. what I do is a light layer of pink, a red-ish clear, and then the pink again and then a clear. It looks fab, but feels a bit heavy. just a little. And it keeps your lips really smooth too.

This is what I do, every night I put Vaseline on my lips, every morning when I brush my teeth(you can do this @ night too I just like to do it in the morning) I use my toothbrush without toothpaste to ';brush'; my lips. Gently go in circular motion on your mouth. This will exfoliate your lips and plump them a little bit...then put on some chapstick. The one I REALLY LOVE(and I tried carmex, capstick, Burt's bees etc...carmex has menthol which dries out your lips which causes you to use more which drys them out it's a baddd cycle and eww)http://www.thebodyshop.com/bodyshop/brow鈥?/a> is this one it has soooo many oils in it that really mosturize your lips and keep them soft. I don't even really have to re-apply and makes my lips really kissable and soft.Lips daily care?
Use a new toothbrush and gently scrub your lips with Vaseline. That works really well. Also apply Burt's Bee's lip balm sevral times a day. I tried many other brands of lip balm but I think that one works the best. And it has a nice tingly feeling when you apply it.
i use carmex and coconut oil both are great for lips ive recently been using this pure vitamin e lipstick that i found for a dollar in the vitamin isle at wal mart works great i use for my eyes too Lipstick will drain your lip color also thats why i avoid using any ive always stuck with my natural color and they are still bright red/pink Good luck!!

Vaseline works WONDERS. i use it everyday before i leave the house and use chap stick through out the day. And i never put lip gloss directly on my lips because it tends to dry them and make them chapped. So I always put it over the Vaseline or chap stick!!!

Ok Personally I use CO Bigelow ( bath %26amp; body works) Metha Lip Buffer Gentle Formula and scrub this on for a few mins, few times a week. I also use a light lip balm under my lip gloss.
I scrub more when my lips get drier like mid summer and winter. But always use lip balm. Hope this helps.
